Accreditation is assessment and confirmation of compliance of testing and calibration laboratories, proficiency testing providers, certification and inspection bodies and EMAS or GHG verifiers with the requirements of international standards establishing general criteria for competence of conformity assessment bodies (CABs).

Thereby this procedure for assessment and confirmation is regulated by the relevant standards and a CAB is assessed strictly within the desired scope, i.e. in the extent of concrete testing methods/standards specified in the CAB`s application. So, as a rule, an accreditation does not cover all activities of a CAB.

In essence it can be compared with an exam to assess the teamwork of a concrete team as well as conformity of the technical facilities of a CAB and competence of the individual teammembers with the requirements of exam.

Seeking of accreditation is voluntary (except in the fields where accreditation is prescribed by legal acts) and can be performed upon a relevant application submitted by the CAB. Only the performed or ongoing activites, not just a presumption for operation, can be assessed and accredited.
